Artist's Project

Fernanda Fragateiro (Montijo, 1962) lives and works in Lisbon. By operating in the three-dimensional field and challenging the tension between sculpture and architecture, her work enhances relationships with place, placing the viewer in a performative situation. Some of her projects result from collaborations with architects, landscape architects, artists and performers. Fragateiro's projects are characterized by a strong interest in rethinking and investigating modernist practices. Her practice involves an archaeological approach to the social, political, and aesthetic history of modernism through ongoing research with archival material, documents, and objects. Her sculptural and architectural interventions in unexpected spaces (a monastery, an orphanage, a ruined house) and her subtle alterations of existing landscapes reveal buried histories of construction and transformation. The artist’ work is held in several public and private collections. Fernanda Fragateiro is represented by Galeria Elba Benitez (Madrid), Josée Bienvenu Gallery (New York), Galeria Filomena Soares (Lisbon), and Irène Laub Gallery (Brussels).
